Stricter Canadian guidelines require that wheat-containing products are clearly labeled. The ingredient list will say “contains: wheat” if it contains this ingredient. 

Other names for wheat or wheat-containing products:

All purpose flour

Atta

Bulgur

Bran

Bread crumbs

Couscous

Cracked wheat

Cream of wheat

Durum or durum flour

Einkorn

Emmer enriched white flour

Farina

Gluten

Graham flour

High gluten/protein flour

Kamut

Matzoh

Multigrain bread

Pastry flour

Seitan

Semolina

Spelt (dinkel, farro)

Triticale (a cross between wheat and rye) Triticum aestivum (another name for bread wheat)

Unbleached white flour

Wheat bran/berries/flour/germ/starch

Whole wheat flour

Other possible foods, ingredients, and non-food items that may be hidden sources of wheat. Read food labels to be sure.

Baking powder, flour

Beer

Coffee substitutes, instant cocoa, malted drink mixes, hot chocolate mixes (wheat may be used as a thickener)

Chicken and beef broth (canned/cubed)

Falafel

Gelatinized starch, modified starch, modified food starch

Granola and granola bars

Gravy

Host (communion/altar bread/wafers)

Hydrolyzed plant protein (HPP)

Hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP)

Ice cream

Icing sugar

Imitation bacon

Malt

Meat, fish and poultry binders and fillers, e.g., deli meats, hot dogs, surimi (used to make imitation crab/lobster meat)

Paprika

Pie fillings

Puddings

Prepared ketchup, mustard

Salad dressings (may use wheat starch as a thickener)

Sauces (e.g., chutney, soy sauce, tamari sauce)

Seasonings (e.g. wheat germ in black pepper)

Snack foods, (e.g., pretzels, candy, chocolate bars)
