Spicy Grilled Cheese

Kids of all ages love grilled cheese sandwiches for lunch. Akhil, from North York, thinks kids will like this recipe because of the mix of cheese and seasonings like cilantro and cayenne. Try serving it with a tangy bean salad for lunch.

Makes: 2 servings

Tips

  1. Use your favourite cheese to make it your own.
  2. Try different peppers to change the flavour. For a spicier sandwich, try using jalapeno peppers.

Ingredients

Red bell pepper                   

 Half

Green onions                              

3 stalks

Fresh cilantro                                  

1 Tbsp (15 mL) 

Chili powder                                                  

1 tsp (5 mL)   

Cayenne powder                                           

Pinch 

Whole grain bread

Light Swiss cheese slices                                

 2 (80 g)

Canola oil                                                                                  

1 1/2 tsp (7 mL)

Directions

  1. Wash hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. Clean all countertops and equipment used for food preparation.     

  2. Gently rinse pepper, green onions, and cilantro under cool running water. Thinly slice the green onion; place in small bowl. Finely chop the pepper and cilantro; add to the bowl.  

  3. Add chili powder and cayenne pepper to the bowl and stir to combine. Spread mixture evenly onto 2 bread slices.  

  4. Top with cheese and cover with remaining bread slices. Brush one side with some of the oil. 

  5. Place sandwiches in large nonstick skillet, oiled side down and cook over medium heat for about 3 minutes or until golden. 

  6. Flip sandwich over and cook for about 3 minutes or until golden and cheese is melted.
