Oriental Coleslaw with Broccoli

If you think coleslaw is old hat, try this sensational variation.

Serves: 6


Coarsely chopped Chinese (Nappa) cabbage or green cabbage

6 cups (1.5 L) 

Ontario broccoli, coarsely chopped 

2 cups (500 mL)

Ontario carrots, grated

1 cup (250 mL)

Fresh coriander, chopped    

1/4 cup (50 mL)

Fresh chives or green onions, chopped 

1/4 cup (50 mL)

Rice vinegar or lemon juice

1/4 cup (50 mL)

Granulated sugar

2 Tbsp (30 mL) 

Soy sauce

2 Tbsp (30 mL) 

Vegetable oil

2 Tbsp (30 mL) 

Asian sesame oil

1 Tbsp (15 mL) 

Clove Ontario garlic, minced


Fresh gingerroot, chopped 

1 Tbsp (15 mL) 

Salt and pepper



  1. Combine cabbage, broccoli and carrots.  Cover with boiling water and allow to rest 1 minute.  Drain well.  Rinse with cold water.  Drain well again.
  2. Add coriander and chives.
  3. Whisk together vinegar, sugar, soy sauce, vegetable and sesame oils, garlic and ginger; toss with vegetables.  Taste and add salt and pepper if necessary.
