Five tips to help you change your lifestyle habits
It’s no secret that changing your lifestyle can be a real challenge. But many people do succeed. Part of succeeding has to do with how you approach your resolutions. Use these five tips for setting healthy eating and active living resolutions you can actually stick to:
1. Be realistic
You may be surprised at what a difference the little things can make. Simple changes such as switching from homogenized to lower fat milk or taking the stairs instead of the elevator are realistic and relatively easy to maintain. Remember that one or two small changes can pay big dividends over time.
2. Focus on the positive
All too often, resolutions leave you feeling deprived. Try reframing your resolutions to focus on the things you will enjoy more of. For example, it may be hard to stay motivated if you resolve to cut out high fat and sugary snacks or find time to workout. Concentrate on enjoying more fresh fruit or time to de-stress and re-energize with physical activity to make it easier. Bring your healthy eating resolutions to life with great ideas to help you re-vamp your eating habits.
3. Make a plan
Set a specific goal and make a plan that you can follow. Write it down and keep track of your progress. If you get off track – don’t give up! Just remember that’s bound to happen sometimes. Think about how you got sidetracked, what is working for you and what is not. The key is to figure out how to adjust your plan to help you succeed.
4. Find support
Having people around you for support can make a world of difference when you’re trying to change your lifestyle habits. So don’t try to do it alone. Make healthier eating and active living a family affair. Ask a neighbour or friend to walk with you. Join a heart healthy cooking or fitness class or find a dietitian or personal trainer in your area, to help you with your goals.
5. Reward yourself
Give up the guilt and be good to yourself. Build rewards you can look forward to into your plan right from the get-go. Whether that be a day to relax and rejuvenate, an outing with friends of family or something special that you’ve been wanting.
