Hot Topic: What you need to know about pesticides

Many people have questions about the safety of pesticides in our food supply. What foods have pesticides? Why are pesticides used? Are they safe? Read on to find the answers to these questions and more.

Pesticides are substances that are used on foods to protect them from diseases and pests. Different kinds of pesticides are used for different reasons. For example:

  • herbicides help to control the spread of weeds and
  • insecticides help to control insects

Some pesticides are synthetic (made by humans) and some come from natural sources like bacteria and plants. Research has been done to make sure that pesticides are safe to use on food crops.

Read the full article to find out more about pesticides and tips on limiting pesticides on the fruits and vegetables you eat.

Question of the Month

Question: My son has autism. Are there any foods or supplements that can help?

Answer:  Autism is a disorder that affects the way a person’s brain works. It is the most common mental disorder affecting children.

Certain nutrients like vitamin B6, magnesium and omega-3 fats have been studied to see if giving children supplements of these nutrients may help with autism symptoms. The Gluten-Free, Casein-Free Diet has also been studied. However, more research is needed. Before giving your child any supplements or putting him on a special diet, speak with your child’s physician or a Registered Dietitian.

Read on to learn about the current research that is being done on autism and nutrition
